Student smells like cat urine...possible meth lab?
I work at a K-12 school and we have a student who smells like cat urine, STRONG. Could this be from living in
a meth lab? |

What other signs do you see?
Does the child have cats? male cats not neutered?
Unkempt? Distracted ,nervous? Dirty nails?
Homework done ?
What all are you seeing? |

The child could be a bed wetter
too, I'm really not sure, I know when I was a kid there were
kids that smelled mad because they would pee the bed and they
wouldn't take a bath and there mom's didn't care either so they
would come to school stinking. B |

Over the years I have had a
number of BAD CATS that would pee on ANY clothes left anywhere.
I don't always hang up the laundry when it has been washed and
dryed, but lay it out flat. Once my husband grabbed a shirt from
the pile. He kept smelling something BAD and low and behold IT
WAS HIM - THE CAT HAD PEE'D ON IT. |

Very true. That is why I asked
about non-neutered males.
But I have known female cats to mark as well.
If the child appears well cared for other than smell, then I
would suggest a conference with the parents.
Having body odor makes for a very miserable childhood.
If the child does not appear cared for, homework not done,
papers not being turned in, agendas not signed, things that just
don't feel right, then make the call.
Neglect is abuse.
If there should be a lab in place, it will get found.
And even more good done for the child. |

It COULD be from living in a
meth lab.
But I'm with the others...
Need more specifics on what else is going on.
IMO, if a child smells like pee (no matter what the reason),
it's NEGLECT.
But if it's because of living in a meth lab... it's WORSE than
neglect.
Either way-- something's definitely not right. |

If there are other indications
of abuse or neglect then you should do a referral to CPS. But if
it is JUST cat pee smell, then I would do the conference with
the parents and explain the situation. |

has any pets or something...
the kid won't think anything of it. |

The kids I knew who lived where
meth labs were often didnt goto school.. and they never really
smelled like cat pee.
My guess is it isnt related to a meth lab. |

Trace, glad to hear you're
looking out for kids' safety.
As others stated, there could be lots of reasons for the smell.
I wouldn't call CPS about cat pee smell, but don't ignore the
situation either. Talk to the school counselor, who's trained to
help kids with all kinds of issues. The counselor can set up a
meeting, get to know the kid, get a better picture of what's
going on. It could be a hygiene issue, pets... who knows- maybe
nothing to be concerned about, but there's no harm done in
helping the kid make friends with the school counselor. We all
need someone to talk to, whether our issues are dangerous or
just normal kid-stuff. |

Could this child be using meth? You didn't mention the age of
the child and I do believe some start using at a very young
age...
